## In practice

An agent compares suitable appointment options and requests a booking within the customer’s stated conditions.

## The distinction

Commerce includes selection, terms and fulfilment as well as payment. Agentic work inside an organisation need not involve a purchase.

## Follow the purchase, not just the payment

Imagine a repair business discovers it needs a technical document while preparing a quote. This constructed scenario starts with a missing input, not a payment instruction.

The agent could inspect existing supplier access, compare outside offers and determine whether a suitable document is available on acceptable terms. A purchase might follow if the business permits it. The result then has to arrive and be useful to the repair task.

| Question | Why it matters |
| --- | --- |
| What is needed? | A precise contribution can be compared across offers. |
| Who can supply it? | Discovery is different from a supplier being suitable or available. |
| What is permitted? | Data access, consequential actions and spending need stated boundaries. |
| What was promised? | The buyer needs more than a price. |
| What happened? | Payment, delivery and unresolved follow-up describe different facts. |

## Agents can participate at different points

A shopping assistant might help choose a product while the person confirms checkout. A business agent might obtain a quote and use an already authorised spending policy. Those arrangements involve different degrees of autonomy; neither requires software to become an independent economic person.

Stripe’s commercial material illustrates agent interactions with merchants and commerce infrastructure. It is one provider’s approach, not a universal protocol requirement.

## Buying is one branch of doing the work

The repair business might already hold the document, ask a colleague or decide the purchase is not worthwhile. A missing capability does not automatically create demand for a new supplier.

The wider [agentic economy](/glossary/agentic-economy) also includes producing services and coordinating internal work without buying anything.
