Agentic economy
Economic activity in which AI agents help people and organisations produce goods, deliver services, coordinate work, and buy and sell.

In practice
A manufacturer investigates a delayed component and proposes a revised plan; a teacher uses a system that adapts practice to a learner’s responses.
The distinction
The economy is broader than commerce or financial services. This is an emerging umbrella term, not a measured market total or a claim of autonomous businesses.
Start with the work
An economy includes making things, delivering services and arranging the resources those activities need. Software can participate in that work before it makes any purchase.
The following examples are constructed to make the category concrete. They are not measured deployments or claims about services available through AE.
| Setting | A possible agentic contribution | What remains with people |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing | Investigate a delayed component and choose whether to check approved alternatives or propose resequencing work. | Engineering suitability, commitments and physical production |
| Education | Select another explanation or practice activity in response to a learner’s answer. | Learning goals, assessment and student support |
| Health administration | Resolve scheduling conflicts using permitted appointment records and approved preparation information. | Clinical decisions, unresolved instructions and care |
| Trades | Gather missing equipment details and refer contradictory records before a repair visit. | Diagnosis, approval of appropriate work and the repair |
The agentic part is the selection of a next step in response to information. Merely producing a document or using AI somewhere in the process does not establish that behaviour.
Exchange connects some of that work
A business may also package a useful contribution for another business or its agent to buy. That introduces questions about the offer, customer, terms, delivery and the cost of putting mistakes right. Agentic commerce describes this buying-and-selling part of the picture.
Circle’s cited article develops an open-market vision. The a16z essay considers software taking on work. Our umbrella definition connects those themes with internal production and coordination; it does not suggest the sources share one settled definition.
Evidence has to match the claim
A count of AI requests describes use of a particular product. Employment describes people in jobs. Payment volume describes specified money movements. None alone measures an agentic economy or proves demand for a particular service.
For a proposed service, look for a useful result, a willing customer and workable delivery economics—including checking, exceptions and rework. For an internal workflow, ask whether the whole job improves. Buying, automation and greater autonomy are possibilities to assess, not predetermined destinations.
